Project Overview
Guwahati, Assam, India, faces significant challenges from recurring floods, exacerbated by climate change and rapid urbanization. This project aimed to develop a comprehensive disaster risk reduction strategy to mitigate these risks and enhance community resilience. Understanding the socio-economic impacts and developing effective mitigation measures were crucial for safeguarding the region’s future.
Started in 2011 and now completed, this project involved a collaborative effort with IIT-Delhi, the Earth Institute at Columbia University, New York, and Sustainable Urbanism International. Key activities included socio-economic analysis, disaster risk assessment, geospatial analysis, historical data analysis, flood simulation, and climatic trend analysis. The project delivered actionable insights and strategies to improve disaster preparedness and response in Guwahati.
